A Crape Myrtle that blooms all summer long.  The Enduring Summer™ Red Crape Myrtle.

Red Flowering Crape Myrtles.  The thing about this Crape Myrtle is that it seems to bloom all summer long. And if you trim off the expired blooms it will bloom until mid-fall. Drought-resistant plants once they become established usually around the third year.

It will grow about 4-5 tall and wide.  Glossy dark green foliage that will turn a nice burgundy red during the fall seasons.  They love the full hot sun but water daily the first 2-3 weeks after initial planting.  Then use a good drip system and set it for about 30 minutes every other day.

Problems with these trees

The most common problem with Crape Myrtles is the leafcutter bee also known as Mason bees.  It will cut a perfect half-moon cut into the foliage.  The bee will then take the cuttings and turn it into its nest.  Use a Garlic Barrier to repel this type of bee.  Learn more about the leafcutter bee here.

July Gardening Tips

Other problems are powdery mildew and aphids.  Spraying with a fungicide with help with powdery mildew.  Neem Oil is a good organic alternative to harsh chemicals.  This oil will actually control both problems.  Using horticultural oil in early spring will prevent aphid larvae from hatching during the growing seasons.  Read more about insects and diseases here.
