Philodendron Birkin plant care.  Recently I was unloading an oversized truck of houseplants that arrived at our nursery store.  One little plant that caught my eye was this shiny, waxy, healthy-looking plant.  I knew it was a Philodendron but what type?  After a little research, I realized it was a Philodendron Birkin to be exact.

A cool-looking plant for indoor decor with white stripes covering most of its waxy-looking leaves.  It will grow to about 3 ft. tall but fast-growing.  It is a hybrid that comes from two other types of Philodendrons.  And like most tropical plants it likes water and humidity.

Most folks think this plant is hard to care for, but it is not.  It’s actually one of the easier houseplants to care for.

Where to place this plant

This philodendron plant does not like direct sunlight nor does it like dark areas. It is best to place it where the sunlight does not hit the plant directly, at least not for more than 2-3 hours.  One thing it does not like is low-light conditions or direct sunlight.

Watering

It likes to be watered about once or twice per week.  Do not let it dry out as it will wither and die. Make sure your container drains well and use good loamy potting soil.  A quick-growing plant that does not need repotting for at least 4-5 years or so.  It does not like its soil to dry out so keep an eye on the soil

Fertilizing

Use a good all-purpose 20-20-20 fertilizer.  Once in spring and again during mid-summer.

The Philodendron Birkin is a beautiful plant, but it’s toxic. That’s its only major downside. If you have pets or young kids, you’ll need to keep it out of reach. Ingesting any part of this plant can lead to serious health issues for animals and children, so extra caution is essential. Consider placing it on a high shelf or in a room where access is restricted to ensure safety.

Problems with Philodendron Birkin

It is not susceptible to insects or diseases, but it can happen.  Overwatering it can develop fungus or root rot.  Be sure that your container drains well and check the hole in the pot several times per month to keep it from clogging up.  Spraying with a fungicide that contains copper will work well.  Neem oil is another way to remove fungi and insects.
