Viburnum Tinus Shrub or Viburnum tinus ‘Compactum’is a handsome evergreen plant that does well in the Southwest. Most Viburnums cannot tolerate the hot summer southwest heat. But this one will!
The “Spring Bouquet Plant”.
A good looking evergreen shrub with dark green foliage and fragrant, light pinkish-white spring flowers right around early springtime. I really like this plant because of its year-round color and compact size. It also produces ornamental berries in the fall.
Where to place this shrub
You could also place it in a large container for a beautiful bouquet of flowers during the spring season. It is not a drought-tolerant plant so it needs regular watering during extreme heat. Preferably every other day after establishment.
It can take the full hot sun but from my experience, it will do better in the morning sun and afternoon shade. It’s perfect inside a courtyard or back porch.
Plant it as a stand-alone shrub to create a striking focal point in your yard. Alternatively, line up several shrubs to form a neat hedge, provide privacy with natural screens, or add structure to foundation plantings around your home. This versatility makes it easy to adapt to different landscaping needs.
The viburnum tinus bush can grow up to 6 ft. in height and about 4-5 in width. It is a compact type of plant so trimming and pruning are not necessary but it could be trimmed to keep it short and compact if that is what you are looking for.
Mass pinkish-light-white flowers.
It does tolerate sandy and clay soils perfect for the southwest. However, it will do better in good loamy well-drained soils. Fertilize it during the early spring seasons for some great-looking pinkish-white flowers.
Problems with the Viburnum Tinus Shrub
Aphids and scale are the two biggest problems with the Viburnum tinus shrub. You can spray them off with a strong stream of water or use a good systemic insecticide to remove these pests. You could also go organic by using neem or horticultural oil to kill them. You can see photos of these pests over at this post, insects, and diseases on plants.
Spraying with horticultural oil in early spring will suffocate insect larvae from hatching thus fewer pests during the growing seasons.
USDA Zone 7-11 Do you know your plant hardiness zone?
