Boxwood landscaping ideas.  For landscaping in the American Southwest, consider using Boxwood plants, also known as Japanese boxwoods, which have a formal and aesthetically pleasing appearance. These plants can be used to create a compact hedge along a driveway or within a courtyard.

These stay green even when winter hits, so you’ll enjoy their color all year. Most types reach about four to five feet tall and just as wide, fitting well into many yards. In late spring, they’ll pop out small white flowers. While the blooms don’t last long and aren’t flashy, they do add a quiet charm before fading away. Some people prefer bolder flowers, but these plants win over gardeners who want steady greenery through every season without much fuss.

Boxwoods are incredibly versatile plants that can be shaped into almost any design you want. Whether you prefer a clean round form, a sharp square, a festive Christmas tree shape, or something more creative, boxwoods make it simple to bring your vision to life. Their dense, flexible foliage are perfect for creating unique topiaries or tailored garden features to match your style.

They like well-drained composted soil, and they do like consistent watering.  Water every day at initial planting and once established, leave your water system on about 3 times per week 15 minutes each time.

The Winter Gem Boxwood

It is a moderate grower photo below and the most common of Boxwoods.  It Can easily be trimmed to any shape or form you want.  You can also plant it in a container and place it in front of a formal walkway or entrance to a home.   They will get about 5-6 ft in height and width, but you can trim them with a good pair of Hedge shears to almost any size you want.

This plant doesn’t mind freezing weather and stands up well to the dry Southwestern heat, as long as you keep it watered. While it isn’t the best choice for xeriscaping, it fits right into formal garden layouts where a neat look matters. With regular watering during those hot summer months, this boxwood will keep its shape and stay healthy. If you miss a few waterings in the heat, the plant may struggle, so staying consistent is key.
